Create Bootable Windows 7 USB Drive

I am sure you don’t want to downlaod and install and run the mammoth Windows 7 yet in your PC. But being a curious techie, you can not leave it unattended either. So what can you do so that both of these hold good? There is a way. You can create a bootable Windows 7 USB or flash drive so that you can test Windows 7 without testing your machine’s performance. You just need a 4GB+ flash drive and Windows 7 installation DVD. Rest I will tell you.

1. Plug in your USB drive

2. Go to Start -> Run, type cmd hit enter. That should bring in the command prompt. (I hope you are running as an adminstrator)

3. Type

diskpart
list disk

The number of your USB drive will listed. You’ll need this for the next step. I’ll assume that the USB flash drive is disk 3.

4. Now type and execute these steps one by one

select disk 3
clean
create partition primary
select partition 3
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

That will just to make your disk formatted and ready with partitions.

5. Insert your Windows Vista / 7 DVD into your drive.

6. Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:

d:
cd d:\boot

7. Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer. So,

bootsect /nt60 g:

You can now close the command prompt window.

8. Now you need to copy the installation DVD to your USB drive. The best way to do it is to use Windows Explorer and that will copy all the files to your USB drive.

9. Now set up your BIOS to boot from USB. and you are done.

New Keyboard Shortcut Keys (HotKeys) in Windows 7

In Windows 7, mouse is still essential, with lots of new feature which takes advantage of mouse gesture, such as Aero Snap, Aero Peek, Aero Shake and etc. However, some users still prefer to use keyboard to use the Windows operating system.

For keyboard lover, Microsoft has added several keyboard shortcuts, hot keys or keyboard accelerators to make navigation and usage of Windows 7, especially the new Windows Aero snapping feature easier by using keyboard. Here’s a few keyboard shortcut keys or keyboard accelerators that new in Windows 7.

Windows + ↑ (Up Arrow) – Maximize window

Windows + ← (Left Arrow) – Snap window to left side covering half of desktop space. Continue pressing the keyboard shortcut will rotate the window between snap to left, snap to right and restore to normal position.

Windows + → (Right Arrow) – Snap window to right side covering half of desktop space. Continue pressing the keyboard shortcut will rotate the window between snap to left, snap to right and restore to normal position.

Windows + ↓ (Down Arrow) – Minimize the window. Restore to normal size and position if the window is currently maximized.

Windows + Home – Clear all but the active window.

Windows + Space – All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop.

Windows + Shift + ← (Left Arrow) – Move the active window to the adjacent monitor on the left for dual or multiple monitors setup.

Windows + Shift + → (Right Arrow) – Move the active window to the adjacent monitor on the right for dual or multiple monitors setup.

Windows + T – Show preview thumbnail of running applications in Windows Taskbar one by one without mouse over.

Windows + P – Adjust presentation options of the display on computer or projector.

Windows + + (Add) – Zoom in.

Windows + – (Minus or Dash) – Zoom out.

Shift + Click a Taskbar item: Open a new instance of that particular application.

Keyboard shortcuts, which also known as accelerator keys or hotkeys, are a finite set of one key or a combination of two or more keys that, when pressed, will invoke an operation or perform a task by operating system or application program running within the operating system, or simply activate and run a program. Keyboard shortcuts or hot keys make it easier for user to interact with computer, which otherwise would typically require a mouse or other pointing device to perform the operation.

Winodws 7 includes many new keyboard accelerator keys that make it easier to work with menus and other commands. Normally, the keyboard shortcuts to activate the command are listed along with command in the programs’ menus (typically a letter is underlined to indicate that it can be activated by pressing the combination of Alt key with the underlined key). Some are not listed and hidden though.

Here’s the full list of Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts or accelerator hotkeys available on the operating system level and also for several built-in application programs in Windows 7, as published by Microsoft.

Well, World Wide Web or Web or WWW is a broader thing in laymen’s' perspective and its Like a HIGHWAY or a BROADWAY, and the Internet is just like a shop or a store along this long Highway. Imagine that there is a long road with many shops / stores both sides of it and that long road is WWW and one of the shop on this road is the Internet / net!

The Internet started for USA Defense project in 1973. Its the International network of computers connected via satellite and servers creating the world wide web of such many networks. The Web works with some protocols like HTTP and so.

This WWW is like a Big Universe and the Internet / 'net is only one of the planet within this Big Virtual Universe! ...The one other difference between the WWW and the net is that, the net works with many protocols but WWW works with just one of the protocol of many supported.

But who cares, they are different or the same: I have to use my ISP with my Internet explorer Browser to surf the net and to live in this virtual world for emails, downloads etc etc... www and net both have revolutionized our lives, and they are one and same for me, I love to live ONLINE and in the world of fantasy, long live the virtual world!

The developer brains at Fring are back to work (well they always have been). This time they cracked the auto roaming feature. This is very handy for all Nokia fans who know how annonying it could be when you get out of Wifi Range.

I have a Nokia N95 and have been testing Wifi Signals around my house. It always disconnects me in the middle of a something when i am out of range. I am still not able to figure out a way to automate Wifi Switchover on Nokia N95. Anyone knows?

However it seems, Fring is reading my mind. Imagine, you travelling at the same time talking on Fring VOIP. At one stage you are out of your favorite Free Public Wifi network range, oops connection gone and you lost a important call? Now you have to find another network, Define a point. Now, never again with Fring.

fring now supports auto-roaming, switching between Wi-Fi and 3G networks (regardless of the provider) without any manual user involvement! There are considerable number of people who visit VOIP Guide looking for cheaper providers and not necessarily FREE voip service. Today we will discuss a great new service by VSNL, which is now officially launched.

While lurking around some older posts, I noticed some people in the USA have already tried and tested this new VOIP/PhoneCard based calling service called TrueRoots (A VSNL product). We also posted their early release a few days back saying this will be interesting service for consumers in USA, UK and Canada. It seems they will be head on with Reliance who provides a similar calling service to make cheaper calls to India (about 7 cents).

Althought there is no major difference in price factor. Reliance has more countries covered when it comes to origination of calls. Reliance services can be used from NZ, Australia however VSNL is more USA focused. Trueroots however offers toll-free numbers in UK and Canada.

Looking at the some of quick reviews and overall history of VSNL, we feel its a good value for money. I can bet the call quality will be nearly local call quality. VSNL is known to be a leader in Indian telecom markets and we expect it to have higher call quality than some cheap local VOIP service trying to route calls via heaven :-)

I guess all USA NRI might like to give VSNL a try and let us know your feedback on Trueroots. Mainly Call Quality/Billing/Customer Service are the primary factors. Voice your views and let others know if its a good service to go for.

'Page Rank' is the Google's 'tool' to determine the usefulness of a Website, Its a complex Algorithm! Named on one of the Founder of Google Larry 'PAGE'! Page Rank or PR is measured on a scale of 1 to 10 and higher is the better.

Google measures it periodically time to time and fixes each time for a Site. The current period to measure the PR is in the wait and VIRTUL WORLD is waiting anxiously for the results and their number. The current Google PageRank update has been going much longer than expected.

...started in July and expected to end August end, All the datacentres are still not updated, leading to speculation and debate on whether Google has done away with the PageRank system altogether??

Gurus are anticipating and explaining the many flaws of PR used to decide a site’s worthiness. Among them:
• PR numbers are inacurate and out of date since 3 months.
• PR has generated an industry of buying and selling links to gain PR which misrepresents a site’s true quality? (I dont know though : )
• PR could be and been abused in ways that are not in the interest of webmasters.

The debates are going on all over the net at various WebmasterWorld with many webmasters criticizing Google for keeping PR as a branding and image tool rather than a useful metric.

But "Don't Be Evil" is the informal corporate motto (or slogan) of GOOGLE and the Online world has to wait wait n wait...GOOGLE RULES THE VIRTUAL WORLD AND CREATES ITS OWN RULES to follow : )

Dash had won the Flash Lite Application Contest 2006, sponsored by Software giants Adobe, Moket and Adobe Mobile and Devices User Groups of Boston, Brazil and Australia.

Site says: "MobileWish is world's first complete mobile greetings messenger in Adobe Flash Lite, which allows users to send and receive the greetings to almost anyone around the world on their mobile handsets."

The software application MobileWish, version launched just last month and The current version, MobileWish 2, has been available since last month.

The software could be downloaded directly from the website www.mobilewish.com. Dash has a claim that there are already over 2,000+ users - most of them from Europe and the US.

He further claims:
"It was a challenge to deliver interactive content with animation, sound, visual effects like in an e-card from a mobile to another handset," and
"Currently, more than 30 models of Nokia handsets support this application, which I have built using Adobe Flash Lite(r) technology," further
"A user first needs to download the software which is available at www.mobilewish.com. Then this software has to be transferred into the user's handset using either a Bluetooth or a cable or infrared (if supported by phone)." After transfer the application will be automatically installed on the mobile set."

VOIP Guide posted about SIP Call forwarding a few days back. The SIP tutorial was featured on many websites. However, we used Voxalot/Gtalk2voip as our preferred SIP Call forwarding service. Gtalk2VOIP still works great however Voxalot is now paid (since 16th July).

If you have been using Voxalot for quite a time and like the features but not ready to pay for the service, then we have have come up with a good solution.

Voxalot is really convenient and easy to use VOIP platform (I call it platform as they are not actually any VOIP provider). Voxalot allows to use as many VOIP services to be used with your single ATA/VOIP phone line and this is a very good feature when you have different VOIP in numbers. Registering all your VOIP in numbers with voxalot will ring all your numbers at one phone line.

The call out with dialling plans via different ISPs is as well a great feature which routes your call to cheapest service provider set by you.

Today we will discuss about a voxalot alternative service which is FREE and has almost all the options that you require in a SIP provider.we are talking about mysipswitch. This sip switch is run by a premiere sip service provider in Ireland called Blueface

As the name suggests this is a sip switch service which allows multiple sip registration with one piece of hardware. The registration is quite simple and straight forward; you do not even need to complete any subsequent link confirmation via email.

Lets see how we do this.

1) Register at mysipswitch.
2) You can register your sip services here and make your own dial plans to route your calls through different SIP services.

3) To make use of your SIP hardware your SIP details will be as below:

User name : your user name
Password : your password
SIP proxy server: sip.mysipswitch.com

Tip: when you register your sip service, add sip: your mysipsiwtch user name@213.200.94.182 in contact field to get incoming calls to ring your phone.

They do not allow configuring the codecs but when we tested their SIP registration, the call quality was excellent and so you do not need to worry which codec will be used to carry your voice. Mysipswitch also have real time call display switchboard GUI and they allow Call holdup/resume, call forward, call transfer etc via their GUI platform.

Certainly webcall back feature is missing here. Hopefully they would add it in near future.

This is an excellent alternative to Voxalot and easy to setup.

iPhone has created the biggest buzz in last 10 years in telecom industry. Now Google is all set to release their Google Phone by Quarter 1 in 2008. We at VOIP Guide have written several aricles in the past about Google phone and its existence.
CrunchGear reports that "A HTC insider sent them a tip this weekend about an upcoming gPhone coming out of Taiwan that should launch Q1 2008. Google is currently assessing over twenty HTC models and refining its final handset design and will create a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail and the calendar app."

We strongly believe that google Phone would also support VOIP along with full SIP support for SIP-SIP and SIP-PSTN calls, maybe a Google Talk mobile VOIP client.

It would be interesting to see how Google will leverage SIP to offer PSTN calls? There were also strong rumours that google will enable PSTN calls in the exisiting Google talk application but there is no official news yet. Maybe Pat Phelan can answer this, he keeps roaming around at googleplex :-)

If ever that happens then what will be the future of our friendsGtalk2voip? Maybe Ruslan can answer it better than me.

Today, we will be discussion this solution to call india for free or for that matter it works for many countries.

You can receive/call up to 100 minutes per month of incoming jaxtr calls to your existing phone if you are in one of the following 51 countries (the number of minutes will depend on your country and the kind of phone you use(For India it provides some 16 mins per months).

Let see how you can use Jaxtr:

1) Signup at Jaxtr
2) Verify your email address
3) Add your phone number by selecting add/drop option in the drop menu
4) You will receive a call from jaxtr team. Answe the call and press the verification code shown on the computer screen.
5) After that computer will show the message that your account is verified.(Sometimes the call from jaxtr team will get disconnected before You enter the verification code. Don't worry in that case your phone number will be added automatically)

Note: Uncheck the privacy shield before making any calls.

You will get a jaxtr link for receiving calls using this registration. That link will be (www.jaxtr.com/user_name) where username is the screen name which you have given while registering at the jaxtr.

How to call using Jaxtr:

1) Open your jaxtr link
2) A widget will appear on the computer screen.
3) Enter the phone no of your friend in the gadget shown
4) First ring will go to your friends phone number and after then your phone will ring.
5) Receive the call and enjoy talking.

Jaxtr will connect the two numbers only once after that a special local number is created. Special local number will be of the country from where your friend is calling (Mumbai's number in case of India).Your friend can call you using that number by dialing at that number from his phone as many times as you want at the cost of local phone.

How to earn Extra Jax (Getting more talk time)

Like most of the VOIP service provider jaxtr also believe in gorilla marketing. It gives you talk time for each user you invite and he/she signs up. Earn 20 jax for each new jaxtr user you sign up.

The Google Phone

Google is the boss of the internet and the boss’s phone gets 1,020,000 results. The GPhone coming in India gets 142 results in Google News. Now the interesting part even Google doesn’t know when the Google Phone is coming out, at least officially. Three weeks ago I did a story on the probable Google Phone, on its pros and cons, partnerships with Vodafone, Samsung and LG and how mobility has been high on Google agenda for a long time, all I managed getting from the Google spokesperson was “Mobile is an important area for Google and we remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce."

Sources close to the project reportedly revealed that a simultaneous launch across the US and Europe is expected, and that announcements would be sent to media firms in India and other parts of the world.

The only obstacle in Google's path is US regulatory approval, which is also expected soon, the sources added. Towards this global telephonic foray, the search major will take a hit to it's bottom line to the tune of an estimated $7-8 billion.

And while not confirmed, Google is also believed to be in talks with Indian providers for offering data and content and platforms including Instant Messaging (IM) and search functions.

Responding to these reports, a Google spokesperson said that they don't comment on market rumor or speculation. But that the company is committed to providing users with access to the world's information, and that mobile becomes more important to these efforts every day.

The spokesperson said they are collaborating with partners worldwide to bring Google search and applications to mobile users everywhere. However that as of now, they have nothing to announce...

Now as with most mobile hacks, this is limited to symbian mobiles which includes almost all Nokia Series60 and Many Sony Ericsson phones.
Why do I need this?
Yep. I felt the same long time back and also left the idea, but our reader Manish wanted to know this. And now I am done with this I am finding this quite useful. I need internet on mobile only to update themes, games and other stuff. Downloading themes, softwares and other stuff on PC and then sending them to mobile is one option but I always find its tedious.
This one is really better as its FREE and speed is much better than what GPRS ever offered!
How it will work?
We normally connect PC and Mobile for file transfer and data synchronization. One step ahead, we use GPRS on mobile to connect internet on PC side. All these means, two devices can connect to each other and share Internet. Only remaining possibility left to check was, can mobile dial/use/access internet on PC?
And here is the solution which will work for sure but may need some efforts…

Requirements…
A PC with internet connection. OS does not matter. Also it doesn’t matter how you connect to internet from PC.
A symbian handset with GnuBox - a free and open-source tool which will do thing on your handset.
mRouter to do things on PC side. Its optional but can save your lots of time. You can manually handle
Now first requirement is obvious, lets take care of the remaining too…

Fun with GTalk/Pidgin: Changing your status messages programatically

We have always seen people trying to come up with catchy one-liners and cool slogans as their gtalk status messages. On being unable to come up with cool, funky and _original_ status messages to impress friends and colleagues, I decided to put on the programmer’s hat and came up with ways to set these status messages through a simple program. Advantages? Well, enormous. Once you can control the status message string through a program, you can basically rotate it (Rotating status messages do look cool ), update it automatically every 1 minute, write a scripts that ‘copies’ your friends status messages periodically :P… Seriously, the opportunities are limitless and only await your imagination! GTalk status messages can be thought on the lines of a Publish-Subscribe Messaging. To understand this, think of a simple newspaper. It publishes some information everyday and its reader in a way subscribe to this information. In the same way your messenger status message is published by youand it is “subscibed” by your friends. This can be thought of as a kind of Multicasting group. So, as part of this blog, I will basically discuss the Google Talk XMPP protocol and will focus on 2 popular IM that use this: GTalk for Windows and Pidgin for Linux (actually pidgin is multi platform)
Configuring Pidgin (in Linux):
For this you will need libpurple-bin to be installed on your system. You can find this in all common linux repositories. For eg. in Ubuntu, this can be done by a simple command:
$ sudo apt-get install libpurple-bin
Once this is done, we need a simple shell script to change our status message. For eg. the script below, makes the current date/time being set up in the status message in case you are “available” in the format :

Now what remains is just to execute this status.sh with pidgin running and you are done! The status messages will keep on changing every 30 seconds and I guarantee it will be fun Please don’t tamper much with the sleep time because while you are chatting, your status message is displayed on your friend’s side whenever it is changed. So you can imagine that it becomes quite irksome for your friend to continuously notice your status message change.
Configuring GTalk (in Windows):
Configrung GTalk messages programatically in Windows is a little tricky (another reason to switch to open source linux:) ) . For this, you need to have a Java Development environment in your system as we need to write XMPP application code using a well known API called Smack API which is in Java.
So, first of all, let us start with installing Java on the system (if you donot already have it) which you can get here. Once this is done, we need to get the Smack API which is an open source, pure Java library for working with XMPP (clients only). The API can be downloaded from http://www.igniterealtime.org/downloads/index.jsp#smack. The source code for this can be obtained from http://www.igniterealtime.org/downloads/source.jsp.Just download the appropriate libraries and put the JAR files in your classpath. If you can’t figure out how it is done, please Google your way around or refer this.
Now, we get down on writing the code!
